Maintain the dryer properly to reduce Dryer Fire Hazard

Dryer can result in a major fire hazard, if it is not maintained properly and does not undergo cleaning on the regular basis. Every time dryer is used, lint escapes into the dryer ducting system and sticks to its walls and edges, gradually results in to the blockage of the ducts. Blockage will lead to the obstruction of the air flow through duct which will result in overheating and creates a potential for the fire hazard. We need to follow specific requirements for proper functioning of the dryer to reduce dryer fire hazard.

  • Most people think that the dryer is the main problem, but it is usually vent pipe that is the major reason behind the problems. Disconnect, inspect and clean the dryer duct run on a regular basis, or you can also hire a professional company to clean the dryer duct to reduce dryer fire hazard. This will reduce dryer fire hazard and increase the dryer's efficiency.
  • Venting pipe or duct exhausts the dryer to the outside of the house, but over the time this duct becomes clogged with the lint inside the dryer while washing clothes. Blocked duct will not be able to take the heat outside and hence result in overheating. So it is important to pay attention to this venting pipe to reduce dryer fire hazard.
  • Dryer pipes must be a minimum of 4" in diameter and limit their length because more the length of duct pipe more is the chance of the accumulation of lint in the exhaust system and finally blockage. Selection of the appropriate dryer duct can also reduce dryer fire hazard.
  • Avoid using flexible plastic dryer venting duct. The aluminum connector hose must be utilized between the dryer and the wall and it should not be crushed because crushed portion will create a problem in venting. The connector hose should only be long enough to get attached between the dryer and the wall with just a little slack.
  • If dryer ducting is clogged or partially clogged, then it is important to have these cleaned. It should be cleaned every 6-12 months to remove the deposited lint in order to reduce dryer fire hazard.
  • It is also important to remove the lint filter on a regular basis after each load to reduce dryer fire hazard. Pull the lint screen straight out to remove and clean any lint by brushing the screen with the fine bristled brush.
  • Inspection of the exhaust end of the dryer is also very important because birds also place their nest in that end. Nest material and birds can also cause blockage which will damage the exhausting capacity of the dryer that will result in heat build up with in it. Moreover, to reduce dryer fire hazard do not put the screen at the exhaust ends of the vent system because lint can be stuck in the screen, clogging the duct and create a fire hazard.

It has been seen that a number of fires are caused by improper maintenance and usage of dryers. Though dryer brings a lot convenience in our daily living, but it is mandatory to clean and maintain the dryer in a proper manner to reduce dryer fire hazard.
